MEET COACH GARRETT
Coach Garrett is a lifelong student and teacher of tennis, deeply passionate about growing the sport at all levels. He grew up in Boise, Idaho, idolizing the Boise State Men’s Tennis program, where his father was the head coach. Garrett went on to become a standout player for Boise State, leading the team to four consecutive Mountain West Conference championships and four NCAA appearances while playing No. 1 singles and doubles. Under his leadership, the Broncos achieved a national ranking of #15 in Division I.
After college, Garrett competed professionally on the ITF Futures circuit, touring Asia, Europe, and North America. He also served as a national hitting coach for the USTA, working with top players on the WTA tour. His coaching career took him to some of the nation’s most respected collegiate programs, including Cal Poly, the University of Michigan, and UCSB, where he played a pivotal role in player development. He was also a coach for Team USA at the Master'U BNP Paribas in France, contributing to three gold medals and one silver. While at Michigan, Garrett spearheaded the launch of the Adaptive Tennis Program, ensuring broader access to the sport.
In 2021, Garrett and his wife, Alaina, moved to Santa Barbara, where he has continued to make an impact on the local tennis community. He has coached at UCSB, led the Santa Barbara High School boys' and girls' teams, and served as a tennis professional at La Cumbre Country Club.
As the Co-Founder of OpenCourt, Garrett is dedicated to making tennis more accessible and engaging for players of all levels. He and Alaina founded OpenCourt to reshape the Santa Barbara tennis scene, bridging the gap in high-quality instruction for the next generation. Their modern approach eliminates traditional club financial barriers, offering top-tier coaching from experienced professionals. Beyond providing weekly high-quality tennis instruction, OpenCourt also fosters a sense of community through wellness initiatives and social events. With an easy-to-use online booking system, OpenCourt makes it simpler than ever to connect, play, and grow in the sport.
